H.J. Heinz Facility Ready for Expansion

Posted 9/15/2011

The Iowa Department of Economic Development board has approved $100,000 in direct financial assistance as well as tax incentives to H.J. Heinz Company for a possible expansion at their Cedar Rapids facility, located at 4601 C Street SW.  The expansion is primarily machinery and equipment, but would also include small building additions.

Heinz purchased Quality Chef Foods from the Ashby Family in 1999.  The operation is known formally today as Quality Chef Foods, Division of H.J. Heinz Company, LP.  Heinz has expanded the Cedar Rapids plant five times, most recently in 2010.  Heinz currently employs 170 people in Cedar Rapids.

The proposed project would include building improvements for production equipment and an 8,000-square-foot expansion for a research and development lab and bulk chemical storage facility. Direct financial assistance is through the Value-Added Agricultural Component program and tax incentives awarded for the proposal are through the High Quality Jobs program.
