CEDAR RAPIDS (The Gazette) - Cedar Rapids shot up 29 places this year in a Milken Institute ranking of the economic vibrancy of metropolitan areas.

Cedar Rapids was rated 57th in the institute’s rankings of the 200 largest metro areas, up from 86th in 2008.

The institute also boosted Iowa City’s position in a ranking of 124 smaller metro areas, going from 25th in 2008 to 22nd this year.

Many of the top-rated cities in the rankings were in Texas and Louisiana and benefitted from high oil prices. The Texas state capitol of Austin was ranked first in the institute’s Best Performing Cities Index.
