Skills Advantage is a certification program designed to develop and communicate the skills needed for employment within the Technology Corridor through a series of assessments. The Skills Advantage initiative is an employer-led strategy that is a value-added piece of information that complements your company’s existing hiring practices. The certificate program was created and implemented with Priority One, Iowa City Area Development Group and Kirkwood Community College as a result of the Skills Report conducted in 2003.

Priority One, in partnership with the Iowa City Area Development Group and Kirkwood Community College, conduct “skills” reports to assess industry’s forecast for our region regarding future workforce needs and skill set demands.  The comprehensive and timely study allows community partners to properly prepare and strategically plan for shifts in an increasingly knowledge-based economy.

Highlights from the report include:

  • 60% of area employers provide internships
  • 99% of employers provide training to employees
  • 73% of those surveyed require high school education or above
  • 51% of those surveyed require a bachelors degree or above
