The Cedar Rapids metro area and its surrounding communities have ready access to reliable, affordable utilities.

  • Alliant Energy is the primary supplier of electricity and steam in Cedar Rapids and repeatedly ranks as one of the most competitive priced suppliers for commercial/industrial customers. Linn County REC, a local power cooperative also serves areas within the Cedar Rapids MSA.
  • MidAmerican Energy Company is the provider of natural gas. MidAmerican Energy purchases its natural gas from four different transcontinental pipelines that pass through the area allowing them to provide natural gas prices consistently well below the national average.
  • The Cedar Rapids area is well served by a variety of telecommunication service companies such as Qwest Corporation, AT&T, Sprint, Iowa Telecom, McLeodUSA and South Slope Communications. Services available include digital switch technology, fiber service, remote and on-site monitoring, ISDN and DSL available from the switch, central offices on self-healing fiber rings, and dual fiber feed.
  • Affordable and abundant utilities are available by the City of Cedar Rapids. Due to the food processing and biotechnology industrial base, the area has an excess of water and wastewater treatment capacity capable of accommodating over 2 million people. The current water treatment capacity is 65 million gallons per day.
